In 2000, Levin and his team built a maze for slime mold to solve. They put oat flakes, a favorite of slime mold, at one end and the slime mold at the other and were astonished to watch the slime mold branch off to investigate different potential paths to the oat flakes. The mold then retracted from the less promising routes to squish itself through the shortest path to its treat.
