Risk is the issue here, did you buy in? were you paid for your skill at a competitive rate? Then I am not sure what else you think you "deserve". Your solution to leverage a company at opportunist moments, or to "hide" away in the synergies of a new organization is why I remarked I personally would not want this type of person (you) in my NEWCO.
What I am trying to say to you is up your game if you are valuable get options in the beginning of your contract not when it is opportune to leverage.
Everyone is replaceable especially management - know that going in and if your game is really top shelf then ask for compensation day one so when the liquidity event occurs you will feel fine. If your game isnt top shelf then work harder OR be satisfied with where your life is now- less stress for those that come to terms with who they really are.
